Respite Care is time off for you. A trained caregiver comes to your home and takes over the tasks you’ve been doing alone, companionship, medication reminders, meals, personal care, whatever fills your days. You step back. They step in. For a few hours, a day, or longer.
On a typical day, our caregiver arrives and you leave. They’re there for bathing, dressing, medication timing, preparing lunch, helping with mobility, keeping your family member engaged and safe. You’re at home alone. You’re at a coffee shop. You’re at an appointment you’ve been postponing. You’re asleep.
Colebrook families often call us after a hospital stay at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital or when they realize one person can’t do this alone anymore. We’re nurse-founded, which means we understand what caregivers are actually carrying and how to match someone who gets it, not just someone who shows up.
Our founder built this company because she lived it. We’re not using a script about your feelings. We understand why you haven’t asked for help yet, why guilt shows up even when you know you need a break, and why that first call is hard. We listen first.
We don’t assign a caregiver based on availability alone. We talk to you about your family member’s personality, needs, and what matters most to you. Then we brief that caregiver thoroughly. The first time works because both sides are prepared.
Plans change. Someone gets sick. You need to adjust. You call us directly and reach someone who knows your situation, not a scheduling line. If your regular caregiver can’t make a shift, we have backup and we manage the transition.
We know the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital discharge process, the Colebrook neighborhoods, the roads, the local doctors. We’re not learning your town. We’re already here, which means faster response and caregivers who understand the context of your life.
How it works
We listen to your situation. No forms, no pressure, no sales pitch.
For Respite Care specifically, not just whoever is available that week.
Often same day for urgent Colebrook families who need respite care now.
We stay in contact so you’re never left wondering how things are going.
Why families choose us
Every aide is trained and supervised through an RN’s lens — not just placed and forgotten.
Personality fit matters more than skill on paper. We match for temperament, pace, and patience.
No franchise rotation. You work with the people who run this agency — direct, accessible, accountable.
Most families are matched with a caregiver within 24 to 48 hours. When something shifts at home, we move quickly.
We build a daily structure around your parent’s rhythm — meals, walks, evenings — and protect it.
You hear from us, not just the aide. Updates on appetite, sleep, mood, mobility — the things that matter.
Every caregiver clears a multi-step screening — background check, reference checks, and an in-person interview with our RN founder — before they're ever placed in a home.
Why families trust us
Private Duty Aides is nurse-founded. Every caregiver clears a multi-step screening — a background check, reference checks, and an in-person interview with our RN founder — before they are ever placed in a home. You get the same consistent caregiver, matched by a nurse, not whoever happens to be available.
Common questions
A caregiver arrives and takes over what you've been doing. That includes meals, medication reminders, bathing or showering, dressing, toileting, mobility help, companionship, and keeping your family member safe and occupied. We don't do medical nursing unless you have a nurse on staff already. We do the caregiving that's wearing you out. You decide what matters most and we focus there.
We typically start within 3 to 5 days of your call. If you're coming home from the hospital, tell us that when you reach out. We can often arrange a caregiver before discharge day so there's no gap at home. We'll coordinate with the hospital's discharge team and review any instructions with your caregiver before they arrive.
Respite Care is private pay. Medicare doesn't cover it, and most insurance plans don't either. We're upfront about cost because we want you to make the decision without surprises. Many families find that a few shifts per week costs less than they expected and gives them back time they can't put a price on.
Home health aides are usually ordered by a doctor and covered by Medicare or insurance for a specific medical reason. Respite Care is something you arrange directly for the caregiving and companionship that's burning you out. Both are in-home, but respite is about giving you a break, not replacing medical care. You're in charge of when it happens and what it looks like.
Yes. We talk to you about who your parent is, what they need help with, and what personality fit matters. If your parent does better with men, or speaks another language, or needs someone patient with memory loss, we listen to that. We then brief that caregiver on what to expect. Colebrook is small enough that we know the neighborhoods and can usually match someone local.
We have backup. If your scheduled caregiver gets sick or can't make a shift, we contact you and find coverage. If it's last minute, we manage it so your family member isn't left without care and you're not scrambling. You always know who's coming and why, and we keep you in the loop.
