Common questions
A typical Companion Care visit might include making breakfast together, talking over coffee, helping with a grocery run or light tidying, and maybe a walk or some time outside if your parent is up for it. The aide is also watching for anything that seems different, a change in mood, appetite, or energy, and they'll let us know if something feels off. The day looks different for every client because the whole point is fitting into your parent's actual life, not running a standard program.
We work with families regularly on post-discharge situations from Windham Hospital, and we know that the window between discharge and getting help set up can feel stressful. In most cases we can start within 48 hours of your call, and if the situation is urgent we'll do everything we can to get someone in place sooner. Call us as soon as you know the discharge date and we'll work backward from there.
Medicare does not cover non-medical Companion Care, and most private insurance plans don't either. Long-term care insurance sometimes covers it, so it's worth checking your parent's policy. We're a private-pay agency, which means families pay out of pocket. We're upfront about our rates and we'll walk you through what a typical schedule costs so there are no surprises.
A home health aide provides hands-on personal care like bathing, dressing, or wound care, and typically works under a medical order. Companion Care is non-medical. Our aides provide company, help with light daily tasks, transportation, and general support. If your parent needs both, we can talk through how to structure that. A lot of families find they need more than one type of support as time goes on.
Yes, and for Companion Care we consider this part of the job, not a bonus. We'll ask you about your parent's personality, what they care about, how they communicate, what a good visit looks like for them. Then we match based on that, not just on schedule availability. If the first match isn't right, we'll make a change without drama. The relationship matters and we take it seriously.
We contact you as soon as we know, and we work to send someone familiar whenever we can. We don't just send whoever is free. If it's going to be a different face, we'll tell you in advance and let you decide how to handle it. For some clients a substitute works fine, for others continuity is everything, and we respect that. You won't find out at the last minute without a phone call from us first.
